Keynote Speakers

For GEOINFORMATIK 2011, we proudly present three well known scientists in the area of GI science. Prof. Dr. Mojib Latif from the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at Kiel University (IFM-GEOMAR), Prof. Dr. Antonio Krüger from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and Prof. Harvey J. Miller from the Department of Geography at the University of Utah.

Prof. Harvey J. Miller

Harvey J. Miller is Professor of Geography at the University of Utah. His research and teaching interests include Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis and geocomputational techniques applied to understanding how transportation and communication technologies shape individual lives and urban morphology. His lecture “Transparent Transportation and Mirror Worlds – From Sensed to Smart Transportation” describes transparent transportation systems and the integral role of geographic information science and geospatial technologies. He will describe the science and technologies for capturing, managing and extracting knowledge from spatio-temporal and mobile objects data as critical factors, as well as urban simulation, virtual reality and augmented reality. He holds the view that these technologies could converge to create a “mirror world”: a virtual environment closely coupled to the real world. Transportation mirror worlds could create an environment that facilitates greater engagement and cooperation in real-world transportation systems.

Prof. Mojib Latif

Prof. Mojib Latif from Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at Kiel University (IFM-GEOMAR) will give a lecture about „Global change from space and in models“. He is one of the best known German experts for Meteorolgy and Oceanography and a regular guest at TV discussions about Global Warming. His research results were awarded several times during the last years, for example in 2000 with the Max-Planck Award for public Science and the Sverdrup Gold Medal of the American Meteorological Society.

Prof. Dr. Antonio Krüger

Prof. Dr. Antonio Krüger is the academic director of the Innovative Retail Laboratory IRL, an application-oriented research laboratory of the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence DFKI in Saarbrücken. He will give a lecture about “Innovative User Interfaces for Spatio-Temporal Data”. Antonio Krüger’s main research areas are Intelligent User Interfaces and mobile and ubiquitous context-aware Systems. He worked on the automatic generation of graphics for technical documentations, intelligent navigation systems and personalized media generation. In this context he looked at generation processes that take into account both the limited technical resources of output devices and the limited cognitive resources of the users. More recent examples of his research come from the domain of mobile and ubiquitous computing. Here, Antonio is involved in projects on interactive display networks, mobile augmented reality and interactive surface computing.
